| The Yangtze River as we saw it the month before it flooded was a study in what was about to be lost. One thing we thoroughly enjoyed that is now gone was riding by sanpan along the river's edge. Boat workers used to travel up-river by using poles and hooks and ropes, hauling their goods or themselves between home and market. When we were there, hauling tourists up the twisting river was a way of life for these hardy men. Now, what was once a fast-flowing river is one side branch of the new lake, and these men would need poles 250 feet long to reach the bottom. We were so lucky to see this, a week later China closed to tourists due to the SARS crisis. |
